U-23 donation: Japanese billionaire angry with Dalung

The Japanese billionaire, Dr. Katsuya Takasu who donated $390,000 to the national U-23 football team has expressed disappointment with the Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung for querying the source of his money and putting a question mark on his integrity.
Reacting to the reported call for investigation of his donation by the sports minister, Dr Takasu tweeted in his passable English on Sunday thus: “”Tell to Nigerian sports minister “Check Takasu foundation, I’m little bit angry now.”

Some Nigerians who read his tweet have been reacting also, appealing to him not to be angry while condemning the minister as well as the Integrity Officer of the NFF, Dr. Christian Emeruwa who insinuated that the Surgeon could be a match-fixer in his letter of advice to the football federation.
Nigerian-born BBC reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana wrote “That he (Dr. Takasu) could even be remotely linked to match-fixing has made him pretty upset, as that is an attempt to smear his hard-earned reputation as a physician and humanitarian.

If the NFF’s Integrity Officer had bothered to check him out properly, he would have found his website and gotten all the information that he needed to get about Dr Takasu, before claiming that his donation could be tainted.  He also could have made direct contact with Dr Takasu.

Nigerian officials should do their jobs thoroughly and not try to rubbish an amazing gesture from a very good person who cared about Nigeria’s Olympic football team, when others, who were duty-bound to do so, failed, ABYSMALLY, to discharge their responsibility.”

Obayiuwana added by tweeting to Dr. Takasu thus: “The Nigerian people appreciate what you did for the team,” and went further to refer him to what Coach Samson Siasia said about him in a Saturday Vanguard interview.

Another worried Nigerian, Ngwoke Marshall tweeted “@katsuyatakasu we love you sir for what you did, what the NFF and even the minister could not do for the players,” as another person, Oloye wrote, “Please don’t be angry sir, we love you in Nigeria for that gesture.”
Siasia in the Saturday Vanguard interview had said “What actually happened is that the man (Dr. Takasu) was just curious how a team that was neglected and abandoned could arrive Rio under five hours and defeat the Japanese team that had all they needed and have been put together for over three years, that was his amazement.”

FG Lists Conditions For Dialogue With Boko Haram

The federal government yesterday said it is willing to negotiate with the genuine leadership of the Boko Haram sect for the release of the school girls who were abducted from Government Secondary School Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014.

The government, however, said for the negotiation to take place, the insurgents, in the event that they do not feel comfortable to engage the government directly, can choose an internationally recognised non-governmental organisation (NGO) to discuss on its behalf, show proof that they are holding the girls and identify the prisoners in detention, which they want the government to release in exchange for the girls.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in an interview with journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday, said the Nigerian government was ready to dialogue with the genuine leaders of the terror group who can prove they have knowledge about the whereabouts of the girls.
President Muhammadu Buhari, in an interview with journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday, said the Nigerian government was ready to dialogue with the genuine leaders of the terror group who can prove they have knowledge about the whereabouts of the girls.

‘‘What we said is that the government, which I preside over, is prepared to talk to bonafide leaders of Boko Haram. If they do not want to talk to us directly, let them pick an internationally recognised non-governmental organisation (NGO), convince them that they are holding the girls and that they want Nigeria to release a number of Boko Haram leaders in detention, which they are supposed to know.

‘‘If they do it through the ‘modified leadership’ of Boko Haram and they talk with an internationally recognised NGO, then Nigeria will be prepared to discuss their release,” the president said.

President Buhari, who spoke to the media on the side-lines of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), warned that the federal government will not waste time and resources with “doubtful sources’’ who claim to know the whereabouts of the girls.

‘‘I have made a couple of comments on the Chibok girls and it seems to me that much of it has been politicised.

‘‘We want those girls out and safe. The faster we can recover them and hand them over to their parents, the better for us,’’ a statement by his senior special assistant, media, Garba Shehu, quoted the president to have said.

The president further maintained that the terror group, which pledged allegiance to ISIS, had been largely decimated by the Nigerian military with the support of immediate neighbours – Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin, even as he noted the split in the ranks of the terror group.

‘‘Some of the information about the division in Boko Haram is already in the press and I have read in the papers about the conflict in their leadership.

‘‘The person known in Nigeria as their leader, we understand, was edged out and the Nigerian members of Boko Haram started turning themselves to the Nigerian military.

‘‘We learnt that in an air strike by the Nigeria Air Force, he was wounded. Indeed their top hierarchy and lower cadre have a problem and we know this because when we came into power, they were holding 14 out of the 774 local governments in Nigeria. But now, they are not holding any territory and they have split to small groups attacking soft targets,” the president said.

On the militancy in the Niger Delta region, Buhari declared that while the federal government was also open to dialogue to resolve all contending issues in the area, it was at the moment, doubtful of the ceasefire declared by the militants.

‘‘We do not believe that they (the militants) have announced ceasefire. We are trying to understand them more. Who are their leaders and which areas do they operate and other relevant issues,’’ he said.

The president, however, warned that the Niger Delta militants must dialogue with the federal government or be dealt with in the same way as Boko Haram.

He also gave assurance to existing and prospective foreign investors that their investments in Nigeria would be fully secure and protected.

Speaking at a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, President Buhari outlined several steps taken by his administration to secure the country and make doing business easy in Nigeria.

According to the statement by Shehu, Buhari told the Japanese leader that with the defeat of the Boko Haram terrorists by the military, the attention of the administration was now focused on stopping the destruction of the country’s economic assets by militants in the Niger Delta region.

“We are talking to some of their leaders. We will deal with them as we dealt with Boko Haram if they refuse to talk to us.

“As a government, we know our responsibility, which is to secure the environment. It is clear to us that lenders won’t fund projects in insecure environments. We realise that we have to secure the country before we can efficiently manage it,” the president said.

President Buhari told the Japanese prime minister that security in the Gulf of Guinea, which is greatly affected by piracy and armed robbery at sea, was a priority for the Nigerian government.

‘‘We have provided funds to our Navy to buy new platforms, train and effectively organise the personnel to protect the area. We are looking forward to support from developed nations for satellite surveillance covering the Gulf,’’ he added.

Recalling his audience with G7 leaders in Germany, which was attended by the prime minister, Buhari thanked Japan for responding positively to the request by Nigeria for support in the rehabilitation of victims of the Boko Haram insurgency and the rebuilding of infrastructure in the North Eastern part of the country.

He, however, noted that there was still more to do on education, health and other infrastructure to ensure quick and voluntary return of displaced persons to their native communities.

On the United Nations Security Council reform, President Buhari agreed to work with Japan on the matter, stressing that the case for a permanent seat for Africa on the Council was a moral one.

He equally expressed Nigeria’s support for Japan in its bid for a UN resolution on the problems in East China and South China as well as the nuclear tests by North Korea.

‘‘The UN system is sufficient for the resolution of all disputes and no nation should be above the United Nations. This has to be made absolutely clear and I assure the prime minister that I will meet as many leaders as possible at the forthcoming UN General Assembly concerning the issues,” the president said.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Abe congratulated President Buhari for courageously tackling the Boko Haram insurgency.

He said Nigeria and Japan must work together to improve the investment climate in view of the many Japanese companies wishing to invest in Nigeria.

Abe reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the rapid development of Nigeria through qualitative delivery of ongoing projects in the country, including Jebba hydro power scheme and the Lagos railway project.

“Buhari Requires Three Months Medical Procedure Abroad”- Source

From a top source knowledgeable of the on-goings within the presidency indicate that Nigeria may undergo another round of certainty and tension should the President travel again for medical attention. This is as the source further indicated that the President of the federal republic of Nigeria, General Mohammadu Buhari’s health may have continued to worsen beyond what his primary care givers could continue to manage. The Nigerian based medical care givers along with their foreign counterparts have recommended for a procedure overseas – likely in London – that would require a minimum of three months stay.
According to the information received, President Buhari’s foreign medical care providers have in effect told the President he will require the prolonged stay at their facility to undergo the required medical procedure. The medical experts impressed on the President that the procedure would be necessary. Reports have stated he may be afflicted with cancer. The presidency has not confirmed that the President has cancer. But the activities of the President has considerably reduced. He has become near immobile and less active said a presidential source who also observed the Mr. President’s daily schedule at the villa had also reduced considerably to near non-existent. “He hardly comes to office and when he does, he comes late and leaves early“.

Already, news of Mr. President being away from the presidential seat for another prolonged stay has thrown anxiety into of problems bedeviling the Presidency. Some of the top aides who are largely from the northern regions of the country are not taking the news sitting down – as they know the likelihood of power shifting to the south west to be a possibility. On the same hand, top security experts are reported to be concerned over the resulting uncertainty within the power equation – along with possible unrest within certain regions of the country.

Olu Falae Tenders Email Evidence To EFCC Linking Ex-President Jonathan To N100m Election Funds Scam

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, has submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission an email correspondence between him and a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih. Falae tendered the email as evidence in the probe linking him to N100m election funds

It was learnt that Anenih, in the email, mentioned that he was acting on the instruction of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

A source at the EFCC told our correspondent that in the email dated March 2015, Anenih, who played a supervisory role in the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, informed Falae that N100m had been approved by Jonathan and would be handed over to him (Falae).

A source at the EFCC said, “In the email, Anenih told Chief Falae, who is the Chairman of the SDP that N100m had been approved by President Jonathan as part of the agreement between the PDP and the SDP ahead of the presidential election.

“He further urged Falae to provide an account which the money would be paid into.”

The N100m, which was given to Falae by Anenih, was said to have emanated from the imprest account of the Office of the National Security Adviser in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

It was eventually paid into the account of Marreco Limited, where Falae is chairman. The fund was credited into the company’s United Bank for Africa Plc account, 1000627022, on March 25, 2015.

When contacted on the telephone, a spokesman for Falae, Mr. Alfa Mohammed, confirmed that 78-year-old Falae had submitted all correspondence between Falae and the PDP.

He said, “We had a letter of agreement between the PDP and the SDP regarding cooperation between the two parties for the election. There was an email from Anenih stating that Mr. President (Jonathan) told him to transfer the money to that effect.

“We have submitted everything to the EFCC, but the EFCC has not deemed it fit to invite Anenih which shows that it is people within the All Progressives Congress that are just trying to rubbish the image of Chief Falae, who has served meritoriously as a permanent secretary, SGF and a finance minister.”

Mohammed said the PDP still owed the SDP about N70m, and it was unrealistic of the EFCC to ask Falae to return the N100m.

He said Falae could not have known that the money emanated from the ONSA and thus could not be held liable.

The commission had finalised plans to charge the ex-SGF with conspiracy to retain indirectly the sum of N100m which he ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an “unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

The EFCC had alleged in March that about N3.145bn was mysteriously transferred from the account of the ONSA to the account of Joint Trust Dimensions Limited, a company allegedly owned by the Director of Finance of the Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman.

Usman was said to have transferred N840m to the account of the Director of Publicity of the organization, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, in Maitama branch of the Zenith Bank with the number, 1004735721, on February 19, 2015, while she allegedly gave Falae N100m on the instruction of Anenih.

A former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, and a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Viola Onwuliri, according to some documents, got N350m in two tranches. The first tranche of N150m was paid into their joint account with Zenith Bank on January 13, 2015. The second tranche of N200m was credited into their account with Diamond Bank.

Usman and Fani-Kayode had been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos and their accounts frozen while Udenwa and Falae are expected to be arraigned soon.

Attempts to reach the Media Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, were not successful as repeated calls to his mobile phones did not connect.

Similarly, a text message sent to his phones had yet to be delivered as of press time.

All attempts to speak with Anenih’s spokesman, Mr. Ojeifo Sufuyan, also proved abortive as his line did not connect, while a text message sent to his telephone had yet to be responded to as of 7 pm on Sunday.

However, in a letter he had personally written to the EFCC in January, Anenih admitted that he received N260m for Jonathan’s election campaign out of which he gave Falae N100m.

He, however, maintained that the ex-President still owed him N180m.

Anenih had said, “I was not in a position to ask the former President how he was going to source the fund. I was not a direct beneficiary of the sum of N260m that was a part refund of the money I spent on the president’s instructions.

“A sum of N63 million was disbursed to a northern group, led by elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, for mobilization and post-election peace advocacy in that part of the country.

“N100m was given to the National Chairman of the SDP, Chief Olu Falae, to enable the party to mobilize support and votes for the PDP presidential candidate since the SDP did not have a candidate for the election.”

Nigeria’ll overcome present challenges — Jonathan

OTUOKE—Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that Nigerians must be prepared to protect and develop the country at all times.
He said that the current challenges Nigerians were facing were transient as the country would definitely overcome them and urged Christians to continue to pray for the country.
Jonathan stated this at the public presentation of a book entitled  The History of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Otuoke, his home town, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to him, the essence of history was to know how societies or clans evolved and emerged, adding that there was need to capture the spread of Christianity in communities in the Niger Delta.
He appealed to indigenes of Otuoke to read the book and volunteer additional information for the next edition.

The former President also eulogised the book reviewer, Professor Emeritus, Ebiegberi Alagoa, for his contributions to the documentation of the history of the Niger Delta.

Unveiling the book, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha Jonah (retd), deputy governor of Bayelsa State, who represented Governor Seriake Dickson, said that the book would engender the spiritual upliftment of those who read it.
